Kea: Nestor notabilis - Endemic - Nationally endangered. The only alpine parrot in the world, the kea is one of the true characters of the New Zealand ‘birdscape’. Its curiosity makes it both villain and clown when it interacts with humans.
Wrybill. Ngutuparore: Anarhynchus frontalis - Endemic - Nationally vulnerable. The only bird in the world with a bill bending sideways! The iconic braided river bird, it scrapes a nesting hollow in the clean shingles of Canterbury’s rivers.
Black-Fronted-Tern. Tarapirohe: Chlidonias albostriatus - Endemic - Nationally endangered. A beautiful inland tern that breeds in Canterbury’s braided rivers. Often seen on Auldwood Birds’ Ashley-Rakahuri Estuary tour.
Black-Billed-Gull. Tarapuka: Larus bulleri - Endemic - Nationally critical. The most endangered gull in the world, it is a braided river specialist. One of the ‘top five’ most requested birds by Auldwood Birds clients in Canterbury.
Black-Stilt. Kaki: Himantopus novaezelandiae - Endemic - Nationally critical. The rarest wading bird in the world. Auldwood Birds has a great track record of finding these exceedingly rare birds in the wild.
